The census index for 1940 lists several Ropers for Campbell County, but they appear to be all Rossers to me; it is difficult to distinguish between these two names because of the special way double-s is written.  Also, the two Ropers for Charles City County and four of the Ropers in Dinwiddie County appear to be Rossers to me.

Dinwiddie County, VA: ...14 Jan 1854 ... Special attention to the "polite" arts, including music, painting, wax-work, embroidering, and lace-work, was given at Parson Roper's boarding school for girls near Ford. Among the students were Salome Roper, Pauline Harris, Damarias Cornwall, Lavinia Young, Nannie Lanier, and a daughter of the Reverend Mr. Roper. There must have been pleasant hours of recreation along with those of study at this institution, for it is related that the young ladies frequently went boating and fishing in the lake nearby. ...1870...

Sarah Roper and Mary Roper,..., all of whom positively refused to take the same.  Whereupon the Superintendent notified the parties so refusing to take the oath that their services as officers of the Asylum would no longer be required.

In an 1866 deposition of William Goodman, a ward officer of the Eastern Lunatic Asylum: ... He was ward officer at the time Dr. Watson assumed control ... Witness can't recollect when Dr. Watson asked him to take the oath of allegiance to the Federal government. ... witness did not know of any relatives of theirs who voted for Mr. Bowden; neither has Mrs. Roper, who was retained, any male relatives in Williamsburg.
