Charles City Co. records: This indenture made the twentieth day of February one thousand eight hundred between Benjamin Roper and Martha his wife of Charles City County of the one part and William Hewlett of the same county of the other part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and ten pounds current money of Virginia in hand paid by the said William Hewlett to said Benjamin Roper the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and the said Benjamin Roper doth acquit and discharge the said William Hewlett from the sealing and delivering of these presents he the said Benjamin Roper hath bargained, granted and sold, aliened and confirmed and by these presents doth grant, bargain and sell, alien and confirm unto William Hewlett his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land lying in the said county contain ing by estimation ninety acres more or less and bounded by George Hubbards on the south, Amos Ladds on the west and David Ropers on the north and east sides thereof to have and to hold the said land and premises with all and singular the appurtenances with all ways waters orchards, houses tenements and here? ?taments thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to the only use and ? him the said William Hewlett his heirs and assigns forever without the ? hinderance or molestation of him by ? Benjamin Roper or any person or persons claiming under him ? any of them and the title to the said land and tenements with the appurtenances the said Benjamin Roper doth covenant and ? himself his heirs admrs. or assigns firmly by these presents do forever warrant and defend in witness whereof the said ? hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first above ?. Charles City Co. records: This indenture made this 13th day of April in the year of Christ 1804 between David Roper of the County of Charles City of the first part and George Roper son of the said David of the second part and John Roper of the third part, witnesseth that for and in consideration of the love and affection, which the said David Roper bears unto the said George Roper his son, and for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar current money of Virginia, to him the said David Roper in hand paid, by the said John Roper at or before the unsealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof, is hereby acknowledged, farther the said David Roper hath given granted bargained and sold, and by these presents doth give grant bargain and sell unto the said John Roper the following slaves, to wit, Emanuel, Judy and David, to have and to hold the said slaves unto the said John Roper, his heirs and assigns forever upon trust and in confidence nevertheless that the said John Roper shall and will grant, suffer and permit that the said David Roper may during his life, hold possess and enjoy the said slaves, and receive and dispose of the profits and advantages arising, or that may arise from the labour and services of the said slaves. In the name of God Amen I David Roper of Charles City, ____ being weak in body but of perfect mind and Memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament: principally and first of all I recommend my soul into the hands of almighty God who gave it; as to my body I recommend it to the ground, to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner, at the discretion of my Executors. And as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give demise and dispose of in manner and form following. Then, after my just debts are paid; I give and bequeath to my son John Roper four Negroes which he hath now in his possession Nirt, Mary, Letsy, Randol and Debby: also an equal proportion of my household furniture: to him and his heirs forever. Then I give and bequeath to my son William Ropers Children, one Negroe Boy named Jepe, One Negroe Woman named Isbell and her increase (or children) also then equal proportion of my household and Kitchen furniture Stocks and Crops, which shall not be hereafter given, to them and their heirs forever. Then I give to my grand son David Smith, two Negroe Girls i.e. Siller and Lavina to him and his heirs forever. Then I give and bequeath to my grand son Edward Phillips two Negroe Girls i.e. Kate and Salley to him and his heirs forever. Then I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann Waddill two Negroes i.e. Mourning and Fill also her equal proportion of the household and Kitchen furniture; Stocks and Crops, which shall not be hereafter give, to her and her heirs forever. Then I give and bequeath to my Daughter Susy Heath, three negroes i.e. Rachel, Fanny and Betty, also her equal proportion of the Household and Kitchen furniture; Stocks and Crops, which shall not be hereafter given, to be hers and her heirs forever. Then I give and bequeath to my Daughter Rebecca, three Negroes i.e. Nan, Lucinda and Cela, one bed and furniture, one Bay horse (called Doctor) one side Saddle and Bridle; two choices Cows, one flax wheel, one choice looking glass, and whilst she remain Single, the privilege of the __ling house and Kitchen; half a dozen choice chairs and one small walnut Table, also her equal proportion of the household and Kitchen furniture, Stocks and Crops, which shall not hereafter disposed of, to her and her heirs forever. Then I give and bequeath to my son George Roper one certain tract or parcel of land adjoining my home planation and bounded as follows N__t beginningat the head of Col. Bradleys Mill pond, thence up the broad run to the branch leading to the issuing spring. Hence along William Hewlets line to George Hubbard, thence to crews line, thence to fill Bates's line,then to Col. John Bradley's line, thence down the said line to the Mill pond; thence alongthe pond to the place began at. Also three negroes i.e. Manuel, Jirde and Davy, one Bed and furniture, one Horse called (Victorious) one Saddle and Bridle; teo Cows second choice; also His proportionable part of the Household and Kitchen furniture, Stocks and crops which shall not be hereafter given; and my wish is that he shall take possession of his bequeath's estate, immediatly after my decease to him and his heirs forever. Then I give and bequeath to my son Edward Roper two negroes i.e. Joshua and Mahala, two hundred Dollars, one bed and furniture, two Cows the third choice also his proportionable part of the Household and Kitchen furniture Stocks and Crops, which shall not be hereafter given, to him and his heirs forever. Then I give and bequeath to my son David Roper the plantation I now live on; being bounded as follows ___ Begining at the broad run at the road, thence up the run to the Mill Pond, thence along said pond to the broad run thence up said run to the branch leading to the roaring spring, thence along William Hewletts line to Sadd's line, thence to Burlingtons line to the road; thence down said Road to the place began at; also five negroes (to wit) Edmond, Grace Stefan, Jucky and Cloe, one choice horse, saddle and bridle, choice yoke of oxen and Cart, two Cows the fourth choice, one Walnut Desk the first choice; as also his proportionable part of the Household and Kitchen furniture, Stocks and crops to him and his heirs forever. My desire is that my Man Fill and his wife live or continue with my son John Roper, but not as slaves; but to do moderate labour, and should they live to become chargeable in the Judgement of my executors then in that case, they shall be maintained out of my Estate. Bradley two of the Witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and is truly recorded on the motion of the said executors who made Oath as the Law directs and entered into Bondand securety in the Penalty of two thousand dollars conditions according to law. of Richmond in the Commonwealth of Virginia of the one part and Edward Roper of the County of Charles
City and Commonwealth aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said David Roper for and in consideration of
sum of eleven hundred and fifty dollars current money of the Commonwealth

Roper of the County of Albermurel and the said John Roper, Edmond P. Roper, Edmond Eppes and Elizabeth P. his wife of the County of Henrico of one part and John Whitlock of the last said County of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John Roper, Edmond P. Roper, Lewis L. Charles and Martha P. his wife, Edmond Eppes and Elizabeth P. his wife and Sarah M. Roper for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar current money of Virginia to them the said John Roper, Edmond P. Roper, Lewis L. Charles and Martha P. his wife, Edmond Eppes Elizabeth P. his wife and Sarah M. Roper in hand paid at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge and thereof doth clearly acquite and discharge him the said John Whitlock his heirs &c. by these presents. Charles being examined by us privily and apart from her said husband & having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her again acknowleded the same to be her act & etc. and declared that she had willingly signed, sealed & delivered the same, and that she wishes not to retract it. Charles City Co. records: This Indenture made this 30th day of Jan in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three between James R. Roper and Susan A. his wife of the one part and Nathaniel Lawrence of the other part; witnesseth that the said James R. Roper and Susan A. his wife for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred dollars, to them in hand paid before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, have granted, bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell and confirm unto the said Nathaniel Lawrence, his heirs and assigns forever, a certain tract or parcel of land lying in the County of Charles City, being the same on which the said James R. Roper and Susan A. his wife now reside containing one hundred and twenty five acres, be the same more or less and bounded as follows, viz: On the east by Thos H. Marstow's land and on the north, south and west by the lands belonging Edward Poindexter's estate. To have and to hold and peaceable possess the above mentioned land, with all and singular the premises and appurtenances thereunto belonging, from the claim ofthem the said James R. Roper and Susan A. his wife, or any other person, but to the only proper use and behoof of them the said Nathaniel Lawrence, his heirs and assigns forever. And the said James R. Roper and Susan A. his wife doth covenant and agree that they will, against all persons whatsoever, the said tract of land warrant and forever defend unto the said Nathaniel Lawrence his heirs &c. forever. In witness thereof, we, the said James R. Roper and Susan A. Roper have hereunto set our hands and seals, the day and year above written. (Signed:) Jas. R. Roper, Susan A. Roper. Signed sealed and delivered in presence of Littleberry Eppes, William A. Southall, Wm. S. Harrison, G. C. Waddill. Charles City Co., to wit, William S. Harrison & George C. Waddill Justices of the peace in the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Susan A. Roper, the wife of James R. Roper, parties to the written deed for the conveyance of real estate to Nathaniel Lawrence bearing date the 30th day of Jan 1843, personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her, the said Susan A. Roper acknowledged the same to be her act and deed and declared that she had willingly signed, sealed and delivered the same and that she wished not to retract it. Given under our hand and seals this 2nd day of Feb 1843. Wm. S. Harrison, George C. Waddill. This Indenture was acknowledged in the Clerks Office of Charles City Co. Court by James R. Roper a party to the same, the 15th day of Aug 1844 (after the adjournment of the Court on that day) and with certificate annexed of the acknowledgement and privy examination of Susan A. Watson, the Superintendent, in conformity with instructions from Governor
Pierpoint, then tendered to the officers of the institution the oath of
allegiance to the United States of America, which oath was taken by ... The oath was also tendered to ... Sarah Roper and Mary Roper,..., all of whom positively refused to take the
same. Whereupon the Superintendent
notified the parties so refusing to take the oath that their services as
officers of the Asylum would no longer be required.
In an 1866 deposition of William
Goodman, a ward officer of the Eastern Lunatic Asylum: ... He was ward officer
at the time Dr. Watson assumed control ... Witness can't recollect when Dr.
Watson asked him to take the oath of allegiance to the Federal government. ... witness did not know of any relatives of theirs who voted
for Mr. Bowden; neither has Mrs. Roper,
